Preseason Team Spotlights

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder finished with the West’s best record at 64-18 in 2025-26 before falling in the Western Conference Finals. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continued his MVP-level dominance alongside Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams (who missed significant time last year). Oklahoma City lost some depth pieces such as Luguentz Dort but retains one of the deepest young cores in the league under coach Mark Daigneault. The Thunder enter 2026-27 as co-favorites in the West and remain the team most capable of returning to the Finals with better health.

San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio posted a 62-20 record in 2025-26 and advanced all the way to the NBA Finals before falling to the Knicks. Victor Wembanyama earned unanimous Defensive Player of the Year honors, an All-NBA First Team nod, and finished third in MVP voting while averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.1 blocks. The young core of Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and De’Aaron Fox continues to develop, with Tobias Harris added for veteran scoring. The Spurs enter 2026-27 as co-favorites in the West and legitimate championship contenders with Wembanyama still ascending.

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets finished 54-28 in 2025-26 and were eliminated in the first round by Minnesota. Nikola Jokić remains the engine of the league’s top offense, supported by Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon. Denver added DeMar DeRozan in free agency while largely maintaining continuity under coach David Adelman. Health for Gordon and improved defensive supporting pieces will determine whether the Nuggets can push deeper in 2026-27, but their star power keeps them firmly among the Western Conference’s top contenders.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota went 49-33 in 2025-26 and reached the conference semifinals. The Timberwolves made a bold offseason move by acquiring LaMelo Ball (sending out Julius Randle and Naz Reid) and adding Jonathan Kuminga around Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert. The new-look backcourt raises the offensive ceiling under Chris Finch. Minnesota enters 2026-27 as a dangerous playoff team with upside to climb higher in the West if Ball and Edwards mesh quickly and the forward rotation holds up.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers finished 53-29 in 2025-26 and reached the conference semifinals before being swept by Oklahoma City. Luka Dončić captured the scoring title and carried the offense in his first full season in Los Angeles. With LeBron James departing for Philadelphia, the Lakers added Walker Kessler and other wing depth around Dončić and Austin Reaves under coach JJ Redick. Los Angeles enters 2026-27 as a high-ceiling contender whose success hinges on Dončić’s health and the supporting cast’s ability to fill the playmaking void left by James.

Houston Rockets

Houston posted a 52-30 record in 2025-26 before a first-round exit to the Lakers. The Rockets feature Kevin Durant, Alperen Şengün, and Amen Thompson as their core, with Fred VanVleet returning after missing all of last season with an ACL injury. Additional veteran help arrived in Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanović. Houston enters 2026-27 with one of the more complete and physical rosters in the West and projects as a strong playoff team capable of challenging for a top-four seed if VanVleet is healthy and the chemistry improves.

The Oklahoma City Thunder captured the 2025-26 Western Conference regular-season title with a league-best 64-18 record, earning the No. 1 seed. San Antonio finished a close second at 62-20, followed by Denver (54-28), the Los Angeles Lakers (53-29), Houston (52-30), and Minnesota (49-33). In the playoffs the Spurs advanced through the bracket and defeated the Thunder in the Western Conference Finals to claim the conference championship before falling to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.
