Preseason Player Spotlights

Cameron Boozer, Memphis Grizzlies

The No. 3 overall pick out of Duke and son of former NBA big Carlos Boozer enters as the early favorite. The 6-8, 250-pound forward dominated college as a consensus All-American and national player of the year as a freshman. In preseason he’s shown polished scoring, playmaking, and rebounding while locking in as Memphis’ starting power forward on a rebuilding roster that will give him heavy usage. High basketball IQ, versatility, and immediate opportunity make him the clear frontrunner.

Caleb Wilson, Chicago Bulls

Taken fourth overall from North Carolina, the long, athletic 6-10 wing has impressed with explosive scoring, defensive versatility, and highlight-reel plays throughout the preseason (averaging nearly 16 points). Chicago’s rebuild under new leadership positions him for major minutes and usage as a centerpiece. His combination of size, athleticism, and two-way upside gives him a strong case to challenge for the award if he maintains efficiency.

Darryn Peterson, Utah Jazz

The No. 2 overall pick from Kansas is a dynamic 6-6 scoring guard with elite shot creation and shooting ability. He averaged over 20 points as a freshman and has shown maturity beyond his years in Utah’s system. Playing alongside a young core and expected to start, Peterson has the tools to put up big numbers and has already earned praise from teammates and coaches for his professionalism and work ethic.

AJ Dybantsa, Washington Wizards

The consensus No. 1 overall pick from BYU is a 6-9 wing with elite tools, scoring pedigree (led the nation at 25.5 ppg in college), and two-way potential. He has the highest ceiling of the class and will get every chance to produce on a rebuilding Wizards team. A mild ankle sprain in the preseason finale is a minor concern, but if healthy he remains firmly in the top tier of the race.

Darius Acuff Jr., Sacramento Kings

Selected seventh overall from Arkansas, the 6-2 point guard arrives as an advanced offensive creator who averaged 23.5 points and 6.4 assists as a freshman while winning the Bob Cousy Award. He’s already shown scoring punch and playmaking in preseason and is expected to run the Kings’ offense as the clear point guard of the future. High usage on a non-contender could fuel a strong statistical case.

Yaxel Lendeborg, Golden State Warriors

The 11th overall pick and Michigan standout is a 24-year-old, ready-made 6-9 forward who brings polished scoring, rebounding, playmaking, and defense. He’s thrived in preseason (multiple strong double-digit scoring nights with complete stat lines) and is expected to start early while Jimmy Butler recovers. Age and NBA readiness give him a realistic path to heavy minutes and production on a competitive Warriors squad.

NBA Rookie of the Year Award Results (2025-26)

Cooper Flagg of the Dallas Mavericks won the 2025-26 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year Award in one of the closest races in recent history, edging former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets by a 26-point margin (412–386) after receiving 56 of 100 first-place votes to Knueppel’s 44, with Philadelphia’s VJ Edgecombe a distant third; the No. 1 overall pick averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals while becoming the first rookie since Michael Jordan in 1984-85 to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists and steals, the second-youngest winner ever behind only LeBron James, and the author of the first 50-point game by a teenager in NBA history, overcoming a late-season surge that helped him narrowly outpace Knueppel’s outstanding campaign of 18.5 points per game and a league-leading 273 three-pointers.

NBA Rookie of the Year Award

The NBA Rookie of the Year (ROY) award, known as the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy, is bestowed annually upon the top-performing rookie player during the regular season. This award is given to the player who demonstrates the greatest immediate impact and overall production in their first NBA year. The winner is selected by a global panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters from the United States and Canada. Each voter casts first, second, and third-place votes, with values of five points, three points, and one point, respectively. The selection methodology heavily favors players who demonstrate strong all-around statistical output, consistent playing time, and clear potential for long-term stardom.
