Preseason Coach Spotlights

Ryan Warsofsky (San Jose Sharks)

The NHL’s youngest head coach orchestrated one of the biggest turnarounds of 2025-26, guiding the Sharks to a 39-35-8 record and 86 points after they finished last the previous season. San Jose improved by 19 wins and 34 points, staying in the playoff hunt until the final days. Warsofsky earned a multi-year extension and continues developing a young, talented group built around Macklin Celebrini as the franchise aims to end its long playoff drought.

Spencer Carbery (Washington Capitals)

The 2024-25 Jack Adams winner followed up his award-winning campaign with a solid 43-30-9 record in 2025-26. Carbery has compiled a strong 134-83-29 mark in three seasons with Washington and earned a multi-year extension. Known for his ability to develop young talent while maximizing veterans, he remains a strong candidate to guide the Capitals back into the upper tier of the Eastern Conference.

Paul Maurice (Florida Panthers)

The veteran coach enters 2026-27 looking to bounce back after a disappointing 40-38-4 season that saw the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions miss the playoffs amid a wave of injuries. Maurice, who reached the 2,000-game milestone last season, remains one of the most experienced and respected coaches in the league. With key players healthier and new additions like Brady Tkachuk, expectations are high for a return to championship contention.

Mike Babcock (Edmonton Oilers)

The polarizing veteran returns to an NHL bench for the first time since 2019 after being hired by the Oilers in June 2026. A Stanley Cup champion with Detroit and one of the most experienced coaches in league history (700+ wins), Babcock was cleared by the NHL following a review of his brief 2023 tenure in Columbus. He inherits a star-laden roster featuring Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl with the clear mandate of finally delivering a championship.

Sheldon Keefe (New Jersey Devils)

Keefe returns for his third season in New Jersey after a 42-37-3 campaign that left the Devils outside the playoffs. The former Maple Leafs coach has shown an ability to produce competitive regular-season teams and was retained by new general manager Sunny Mehta. With a talented core led by Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier, Keefe will be under pressure to deliver consistent results and a deeper postseason run.

Jim Hiller (Toronto Maple Leafs)

After being fired midseason by the Los Angeles Kings in March 2026, Hiller was hired by the Maple Leafs in June. He previously posted a 93-58-24 record in parts of three seasons with the Kings, including a strong full-season mark of 48-25-9 in 2024-25. Now tasked with leading a high-expectation Toronto roster, Hiller brings recent NHL head-coaching experience and a chance at a fresh start in a major market.

Jack Adams Award Winner (2025-26)

Jon Cooper (Tampa Bay Lightning) won the 2025-26 Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s top coach.

It was the first Jack Adams of Cooper’s career after previous finalist appearances in 2013-14 and 2018-19. He received 36 first-place votes and 226 points from the NHL Broadcasters’ Association, edging Lindy Ruff (223 points) and Dan Muse (199 points) in one of the closest three-way races in the award’s history.

Cooper guided the Lightning to a 50-26-6 record and 106 points, securing a second-place finish in the Atlantic Division and their ninth consecutive playoff berth (tied for the longest active streak in the league). Despite significant injuries to key players, including long stretches without Victor Hedman and Brayden Point, Tampa Bay posted its fifth 50-win season under Cooper and ranked among the league leaders in goal differential. The longest-tenured active head coach in the NHL became only the second Lightning coach to win the award, following John Tortorella in 2003-04.

Jack Adams Award

The Jack Adams Award is presented annually to the head coach who is adjudged to have contributed the most to his team’s success during the regular season. The winner is selected by a poll taken at the conclusion of the regular season, submitted by members of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association (NHLBA). This award heavily favors coaches whose teams exceed low preseason expectations or drive dramatic year-over-year improvement in the standings, making it difficult for coaches of perennial powerhouses to win. The voting methodology rewards a strong narrative of turnaround and maximization of talent, often going to coaches in their first or second year with a new team.
