So, how is the AP NFL Comeback of the Year race shaping up? Here’s what you need to know.
Overview
In 2024, Joe Burrow was named AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year after bouncing back from a season-ending wrist injury to lead the league in passing yards and touchdowns. The Bengals quarterback threw for 4,918 yards and 43 touchdowns (both tops in the NFL) while also posting the third-best passer rating (108.5) and fourth-highest completion percentage (70.6) across the league.
Burrow earned 31 first-place votes and 370 total points, outpacing fellow finalists J.K. Dobbins (195 points), Sam Darnold (102), Damar Hamlin (86), and Christian Gonzalez (69). Burrow’s award-winning performance came just one year after wrist surgery prematurely ended his 2023 season.
AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award
The AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award is presented annually to the player who demonstrates the most remarkable return to form after overcoming adversity (injury, poor performance, time away, etc). The award is voted on by a panel of 50 national sportswriters and broadcasters selected by the Associated Press. Voters submit one ballot each, and only regular-season performance is considered (postseason accomplishments are not taken into account).

Preseason Player Spotlights
Dak Prescott (+275)
After playing just eight games in 2024 before suffering a season-ending hamstring injury, Dak Prescott enters the 2025 season with a clear goal: reclaim his status as one of the league’s most consistent and productive quarterbacks. Prior to his injury, Prescott was on pace for another strong statistical campaign, leading a playoff-caliber Cowboys team.
At +275, Prescott is the early favorite, especially if he stays healthy, puts up big numbers, and keeps Dallas in the thick of the NFC title race.
Christian McCaffrey (+300)
Christian McCaffrey’s 2024 season was derailed by a series of injuries (including a lingering calf/Achilles issue and a late-season PCL tear) that limited him to just four games. When healthy, McCaffrey remains one of the NFL’s most dynamic offensive weapons, capable of taking over games as both a runner and receiver.
At +300, McCaffrey is a top-tier candidate, particularly if he returns to form and helps power the 49ers to another deep postseason run.
Aidan Hutchinson (+300)
A broken tibia and fibula suffered in Week 6 cut short what was shaping up to be a breakout year for Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. Fully recovered heading into 2025, Hutchinson is expected to re-anchor Detroit’s pass rush and pick up where he left off as one of the NFL’s most disruptive young defenders.
At +300, Hutchinson has strong value, especially if he returns to double-digit sack production and plays a central role in Detroit’s playoff push.
Trevor Lawrence (+500)
Trevor Lawrence appeared in 10 games in 2024 before a concussion and AC joint injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Now fully healthy, the former No. 1 pick has a chance to reset the narrative in Jacksonville and prove he’s the long-term franchise cornerstone the Jaguars expect him to be.
At +500, Lawrence offers strong mid-tier value, particularly if he returns with improved consistency and guides Jacksonville back into postseason contention.
J.J. McCarthy (+650)
The 2024 first-round pick never saw the field during his rookie season after tearing his meniscus in training camp. Now healthy and expected to take the reins in Minnesota, J.J. McCarthy enters 2025 with the chance to go from a year-long redshirt to a full-fledged breakout.
At +650, McCarthy is a compelling dark horse, especially if he delivers poise, production, and wins in his first full season under center.
