So, how is the AP NFL Coach of the Year race shaping up? Here’s what you need to know.
Overview
In 2024, Minnesota’s Kevin O’Connell was named NFL Coach of the Year after guiding the Vikings to a 14–3 record and a near top seed in the NFC. O’Connell earned 25 first-place votes and 361 total points, edging out Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who finished second with 283 points and 19 first-place votes.
Andy Reid of the Chiefs placed third, followed by Dan Quinn (Commanders) and Sean Payton (Broncos) to round out the top five. O’Connell’s win came on the heels of a season marked by major roster turnover and early uncertainty at quarterback – making the Vikings’ success one of the league’s biggest surprises.
AP NFL Coach of the Year Award
The AP NFL Coach of the Year Award is presented annually to the head coach who delivers the most outstanding regular-season performance. The winner is selected by a panel of 50 national sportswriters and broadcasters chosen by the Associated Press. Each voter casts one ballot, and only regular-season results are considered – postseason performance does not factor into the decision. Coaches who exceed expectations, lead major turnarounds, or guide their teams to breakout success are often top contenders.

Preseason Coach Spotlights
Ben Johnson (+650)
Now leading the Chicago Bears, Ben Johnson enters his first season as head coach with high expectations and a revitalized roster. After earning praise as one of the NFL’s most innovative offensive minds, Johnson brings his creative vision to a team eager to take the next step. With a promising young quarterback and major offseason additions, the Bears are primed for a breakout.
At +650, Johnson is a justifiable favorite – especially if he quickly turns Chicago into a playoff contender and delivers on the hype surrounding his head coaching debut.
Mike Vrabel (+650)
Back on the sidelines as head coach of the New England Patriots, Mike Vrabel returns to the organization where his playing career thrived. Known for his toughness and defensive acumen, Vrabel now takes over a rebuilding Patriots squad with a chip on its shoulder. If he can instill discipline and spark a turnaround in Foxborough, his case for Coach of the Year will build quickly.
At +650, Vrabel is a strong early contender – especially if he brings stability and competitiveness back to New England in Year 1.
Liam Coen (+1400)
Liam Coen steps into his first NFL head coaching role with the Jacksonville Jaguars, inheriting a roster loaded with offensive potential. A rising name in coaching circles, Coen is known for his balanced schemes and quarterback-friendly systems. If he can unlock another level of consistency in Jacksonville and lead them back to the postseason, voters will take notice.
At +1400, Coen is a mid-range candidate with upside – especially if he gets immediate results out of a team that’s expected to compete.
Kellen Moore (+1400)
Kellen Moore takes the reins in New Orleans as the Saints’ new head coach, bringing with him a reputation for explosive offense and quarterback development. With a veteran defense and emerging offensive weapons, Moore has a chance to breathe new life into a team that’s been stuck in neutral.
At +1400, Moore is a high-upside pick. If the Saints improve quickly under his leadership and push for the NFC South title, he’ll be a serious Coach of the Year contender.
Pete Carroll (+1800)
After a legendary run in Seattle, Pete Carroll returns to the AFC as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. Carroll’s energy, experience, and defensive mindset could be just what the Raiders need to reset the culture and elevate a roster filled with young talent and veteran grit. If Vegas plays tough and stays competitive in a stacked division, Carroll’s comeback narrative will carry weight.
At +1800, Carroll is a solid value pick – especially for bettors backing a veteran coach to spark a turnaround in a high-pressure market.
