Preseason Coach Spotlights

Darko Rajaković, Toronto Raptors

Rajaković guided the Raptors to a 46-36 record and the East’s No. 5 seed in 2025-26, a 16-win improvement that earned him a multi-year extension. With Kawhi Leonard now back in Toronto alongside Scottie Barnes and a young core he has developed, Rajaković enters 2026-27 with elevated expectations and a clearer path to a top-seed push that could put him firmly in the Coach of the Year conversation.

Will Hardy, Utah Jazz

Hardy has spent four seasons patiently building culture and developing talent through a difficult rebuild, finishing 22-60 in 2025-26. With the addition of Jaren Jackson Jr. and high-upside pieces like Darryn Peterson around Lauri Markkanen and Keyonte George, Utah finally has the talent to contend for a playoff spot. A jump into the mid-40s in wins would give Hardy one of the strongest improvement narratives in the league.

Nick Nurse, Philadelphia 76ers

Nurse returns to a reloaded 76ers roster that added Jaylen Brown in the offseason. Known for his adaptive schemes and ability to maximize star talent, Nurse has a chance to guide Philadelphia back toward the top of the East. If the Sixers exceed preseason expectations and contend for a high seed, Nurse’s track record of elevating teams makes him a strong Coach of the Year candidate.

Erik Spoelstra, Miami Heat

Spoelstra continues to extract maximum performance from Miami’s roster year after year. Even without the brightest collection of star power, the Heat remain competitive under his leadership through elite preparation, defensive identity and player development. Another season of overachieving relative to outside projections would keep Spoelstra in the mix for an award he has long been considered for.

Rick Carlisle, Indiana Pacers

Carlisle is entering a pivotal season after a difficult 2025-26 campaign. With a talented young core still in place and the opportunity to bounce back in a competitive Eastern Conference, Carlisle’s experience and tactical acumen position him well. A return to playoff contention and meaningful improvement in the win column would put the veteran coach squarely in the Coach of the Year discussion.

Chris Finch, Minnesota Timberwolves

Finch has steadily elevated the Timberwolves into consistent Western Conference contenders. With a core featuring Anthony Edwards and a supporting cast that continues to grow under his system, Minnesota enters 2026-27 with championship aspirations. Sustaining high-level performance or taking another step forward in the standings would strengthen Finch’s case for individual recognition.

NBA Coach of the Year Award Results (2025-26)

Joe Mazzulla of the Boston Celtics won the 2025-26 NBA Coach of the Year Award, capturing the Red Auerbach Trophy with 62 of 100 first-place votes after leading Boston to a 56-26 record and the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference despite Jayson Tatum missing most of the season with a torn Achilles; Detroit’s J.B. Bickerstaff finished second for the second straight year and San Antonio’s Mitch Johnson placed third, as Mazzulla became the youngest winner since 1975 and the fourth Celtics coach to claim the honor while posting his fourth consecutive 50-win campaign.

NBA Coach of the Year Award

The NBA Coach of the Year award, known as the Red Auerbach Trophy, is presented annually to the head coach who is deemed most integral to their team’s success during the regular season. The winner is selected by a global media panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters who vote based on criteria that heavily favors coaches whose teams exceed preseason expectations or drive dramatic year-over-year improvement.
